Today, outdoor renovations are entirely focused on everyday living, comfort, and functionality, transforming backyards into true, highly personalized extensions of the indoors.

Whether you are planning a complete backyard overhaul or looking for a few high-impact upgrades, here are the defining outdoor remodeling trends shaping 2026, according to the newly released 2026 U.S. Houzz Outdoor Trends Study.

1. High-Tech Systems Take Center Stage

While adding plants and minor decor used to satisfy a seasonal refresh, homeowners are now tackling more ambitious, system-heavy projects. In fact, system upgrades have overtaken decorating projects. The overwhelming majority of these systems focus on landscape lighting and irrigation, ensuring that outdoor spaces are both highly functional at night and easier to maintain.

2. The Rise of Synthetic Turf

Lawns are shrinking, and in some cases, disappearing entirely. The share of homeowners replacing original lawns with natural grass dropped significantly, while lower-maintenance hardscaping and mulch saw big gains. Synthetic turf also surged in popularity, jumping 10 percentage points to a 19% adoption rate. When it comes to plant selection, eco-consciousness rules: interest in low-maintenance native, and drought-resistant plants all grew, with 56% of homeowners surveyed specifically choosing flora that attracts pollinators.

3. A Massive Surge in Shade Structures

As people spend more time living and working from their backyards, protecting themselves from the elements has become crucial. Interest in shade structures skyrocketed, with 35% of homeowners adding them to their spaces, a massive 15-percentage-point increase from two years ago. Decks remain the ultimate structural staple, with 43% of homeowners renovating the outdoors choosing this structure, but shaded pavilions, pergolas, and covered patios are trailing closely behind.

4. Ultra-Equipped Outdoor Kitchens

The days of a simple standalone charcoal grill are fading. Outdoor kitchens are becoming permanent, fully equipped culinary hubs. Among homeowners building these spaces, an incredible 95% are constructing them entirely from scratch. These modern setups boast serious infrastructure: 68% feature plumbing, electrical, or heating systems, and 61% install permanent appliances. While grills and beverage fridges top the wish lists, built-in storage solutions saw the largest growth.

5. Spaces Zoned for Lounging and Quiet Retreats

Rather than just having one large patio, 2026 yards are carefully zoned for specific activities. Lounge areas are the most dominant feature, appearing in 83% of redesigns and featuring cozy indoor-style sofas, fire pits, and even TVs. Furthermore, 55% of yards include dedicated dining zones, and 53% feature a quiet retreat or reading nook designed for solitude and mental wellness.

6. Turning to the Pros

Because these projects have evolved from simple weekend DIYs into complex engineering feats involving plumbing, gas lines, and smart lighting, professional hiring has reached an all-time high. Seventy-one percent of homeowners now hire a professional for their outdoor projects, with landscape contractors, hardscape specialists, and general contractors leading the charge.

7. An Improvement in Daily Living is Driving Demand

The motivation behind outdoor updates has undergone a major shift. Only 15% of homeowners are renovating to boost resale value (a drop of 3 percentage points since 2024). Instead, 25% are updating their yards simply to make them more accommodating for daily use. Homeowners are choosing layouts and features that maximize their own immediate quality of life.
