You’ve decided to move – maybe for a job, or to move closer to family, or to retire to a warmer climate. There are lots of different reasons for moving, but regardless of reason, there are some basic costs you can expect with relocating to a new place.
Selling your home. When you’re ready to move, you need to get your home ready to sell. A good Realtor® (I can help you with that!) can make suggestions regarding repairs or other enhancements to make your home marketable. That could mean cutting down the dead tree in your yard or replacing the broken seals on windows. You may incur other costs as you negotiate a contract with a buyer, i.e. you agree to pay closing costs or give a buyer credit for an item that needs repair or replacement.
Temporary Housing. If there’s a time lapse between selling your home and buying a home in your new location, you may need temporary housing. The cost varies depending if you rent furnished or unfurnished temporary living arrangements.
Moving your household goods. When you move – whether it’s across town or across the country – you need to pack, load, move, unload and finally, unpack at your new location. The cost of this will vary depending on if you do part, most or all of this – or hire movers to do it. Keep in mind that the same amount of time and effort is required no matter how near or far you are . Also, be sure to factor in the cost of boxes, packing materials and tape. Check with your mover or friends for used boxes you can pick up for free.
Buying a home in your new location. When you purchase a home in your new location, there will be costs for inspections and closing costs, which may include taxes. Insurance costs may be higher or lower, depending on where you are moving. Then of course there’s the rest – buying curtains, blinds and furniture; installing cable and internet; deposits for utilities, and fees for garbage collection. If you move to a different state, you’ll also need to pay for a new vehicle registration and driver’s license.
Like anything, planning ahead for anticipated – as well as unforeseen costs – will help your move go smoothly and reach your ultimate goal: making a new home for your family in new place.
