Howard Hanna Beverly-Hanks Real Estate sponsors community fundraiser in Burnsville
La Esperanza, a non-profit outreach program serving more than 400 Latino families and individuals in Madison, Buncombe and Yancey counties, is the latest recipient of Karma Keg, a community-driven social event sponsored by Howard Hanna Beverly-Hanks Real Estate.
The event held October 16, 2025 at Homeplace Beer Co. in Burnsville, brought together agents, staff and community members for an evening of connection and giving,
Founded in 2017, Karma Keg is a Howard Hanna Beverly-Hanks tradition where attendees purchase drink tickets at a local brewery and individually cast their vote for a local non-profit organization. At the end of the evening, one winner is drawn to receive the pooled proceeds from the event.
At the fall event, Howard Hanna Beverly-Hanks Realtor Maribel Onchi was drawn as the winner, and her connection to La Esperanza was personal.
“I first learned about La Esperanza after Hurricane Helene,” Onchi said. “Since then, I’ve seen how much they’ve done for our local Latino community—getting resources out to families, providing food and supplies, helping cover attorney fees, supporting housing needs, and even giving backpacks to kids going back to school. They’ve truly made a difference for so many people, and they have some amazing volunteers who make it all possible.”
“This win was especially meaningful because Jennifer, the co-director of La Esperanza, and I actually grew up together. Seeing her now helping lead and support our community feels like such a full-circle moment,” Onchi said.”To see such a big crowd of supporters for La Esperanza at Karma Keg was really special.”
“Karma Keg is one of our favorite traditions because it brings people together for something that’s both fun and meaningful,” said Stephanie Buss, marketing and community engagement specialist with Howard Hanna Beverly-Hanks. “After the devastation our region has experienced from Hurricane Helene, the importance of community feels stronger than ever. Events like this remind us how much good can happen when neighbors come together to support one another.”
To date, Karma Keg has raised more than $20,000 for local non-profits in Western North Carolina, combining good beer, good company and a good cause. In June, the Summer Karma Keg at Appalachian Mountain Brewery in Boone raised $3,200, with proceeds split between the Caramella family and Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue.
Past Karma Keg recipients have included Asheville Community Theatre, Big Brothers Big Sisters of WNC, Blue Ridge Humane Society, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, Homeward Bound WNC, Smart Start Partnership for Children, Broyhill Children’s Home, and WNC Down Syndrome Alliance.
The next Karma Keg event will be held April 16, 2026 from 6-8 pm at Frog Level Brewing in Waynesville.
