Home gyms have been popular for the last several years, with more and more homeowners opting to turn a spare room or half of their garage into a functional home gym. In the long run, home gyms can save you a considerable amount of money when you factor in the cost of most monthly gym memberships. Beyond the cost savings, the convenience factor cannot be ignored. It’s hard to find an excuse not to work out when your home gym is a mere 10 steps away. Thinking about converting space in your home to create a home gym? Here’s how to get started.

Start small

If you’re just starting out, you don’t have to break the bank to create a home gym. Start small and slowly add equipment as budget allows. Adjustable dumbbells that are cost-effective and save space are an easy first investment. Another good purchase is a treadmill or stationary bike for cardio. If you have the budget to invest a little more, get your home gym started with a barbell, squat rack, bench, weight plates and a jump rope.

Make use of vertical storage space

Most home gyms are in small areas or in tiny corners of garages, and if this is also your situation, make the most of your square footage by using vertical wall space. Install a pegboard to store resistance bands, knee wraps, and anything else you might need readily available. It’s also smart to get all the weights off the floor and on a storage rack to minimize clutter and injuries.

Install rubber flooring

Rubber flooring is a great way to make your home gym comfortable and functional. You can install one large rubber mat or choose to do rubber tiles if the room is used for other purposes while you’re not working out.

Make the room appealing

Create a room you look forward to entering by creating ambiance in the room. A bold paint color to color-drench the space, art and mood lighting will entice you to uphold your fitness goals. Add some flair to the room with an LED lightstrip that you can easily control from your phone.

Don’t forget about adding a tv to stream your favorite workouts or shows, too!

Add a fridge

Find an inexpensive mini fridge to keep beverages cold and help you cool down during sweat sessions.

We hope this post inspires you to create the home gym of your dreams!
