Attractions in Asheville, NC's Haw Creek neighborhood.

Just to the east of downtown Asheville is the scenic neighborhood of Haw Creek. Named for the majestic valley where it lies, homes within Haw Creek are surrounded by the natural beauty of the mountains. Scenic trails crisscross the neighborhood, yet is still conveniently located near one of Asheville’s main centers of commerce along Tunnel Road.

On warm spring days, Haw Creek residents are pulled to enjoy all the amenities their surrounding area has to offer. Here are just five local attractions within a few minutes of Haw Creek.

Asheville Municipal Golf Course

Did you know that the Asheville Municipal Golf Course is one of the oldest golf courses in Western North Carolina? In fact, it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Donald Ross designed this 18-hole, par 72 course, opened originally in 1927. Right now, the front nine is being rebuilt to Ross’s original design. But the back nine is so fun, those who book 18 holes get to play it twice. Stop by the fully-stocked pro shop for the best in equipment and apparel to complement your game.

Blue Ridge Parkway

The Haw Creek neighborhood backs up to a section of the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway. (In fact, some of the neighborhood walking and hiking trails lead to the Parkway.) Known as “America’s Favorite Drive,” the Blue Ridge Parkway is more than a convenient roadway linking rural mountain areas of Western North Carolina and Virginia—it’s one of the most popular national parks in the U.S. parks system. Take the route to Mount Mitchell, the highest mountain east of the Rockies, or simply enjoy the scenic overlooks nearby.

Editor’s Note: Sections of the BRP remained closed for ongoing road maintenance, construction, and Helene recovery projects, including around Milepost 380 near Haw Creek. Please enjoy nearby open sections of the Parkway responsibly and pay attention to all safety and closure notices.

Folk Art Center

While you’re on the BRP, navigate to Milepost 382, where you can find the entrance to the Folk Art Center. The center is a museum of Appalachian arts and crafts that’s worth the stop for locals and visitors alike. In addition to rotating exhibitions showcasing the finest traditional and contemporary local craft, the Folk Art Center hosts a variety of events, fairs, and markets. And you can time your visit to coincide with daily artist demonstrations from March–December. Best of all—admission is free! It’s no wonder the Folk Art Center is the most popular attraction along the Parkway, drawing 250,000 people each year.

Highland Brewing Company

Independent and family owned since 1994, Highland Brewing Company carved the path for Asheville’s craft beer movement. Today, Highland sits on a sprawling 11-acre facility on 40 acres of land and has the capacity to brew over 60,000 barrels of beer each year. Check out the back pasture on nice days, but don’t miss the indoor taprooms and event spaces. Their rooftop bar accommodates 300 people, and the main level Event Center welcomes over 700 people around the stage, mezzanine, and two bars. Local disc golfers play an estimated 9,000 games a year on their 18-hole course, pictured at the top.
