A dedicated home office space has long been on many homeowners’ wish lists, and now, a year into a pandemic that forced many people to set up makeshift offices on their dining room table, the need for a home office space has never been greater.

As the work from home trend continues, the importance of having a space that spurs creativity and productivity is paramount, and to that end–here are 5 tips to create the office space you’ll love.

Let the light in

First and foremost, you want to make sure your home office is close to natural light. In a recent study published by Harvard Business Review, access to natural light was the number one attribute workers wanted in their workspace. Natural light helps lower the effect of Seasonal Affective Disorder, makes us more productive during the day and actually helps you sleep better, too.

Reduce eye strain by adding in a floor lamp and perhaps a light on your desk to supplement the light you’ll get from your nearby window.

Bring in the green

In addition to making sure you have enough natural light, aim to incorporate plenty of greenery into your office space, as well. Fiddle leaf or olive trees dress up an empty corner and smaller plants like a snake plant are great for accessorizing a desk or bookshelf. Even if you don’t have a green thumb you can still create the look with dried eucalyptus in a pretty vase.

Make a dedicated space

Even if your office space is in a corner of a room, you can still create a dedicated space that makes you feel inspired and creative. Just look at how this small desk to the right of the bed works beautifully as a work from home set up–proof that you don’t need an entire room!

Don’t skimp on design

Take the time to pull together your WFH space so that it’s a spot you feel energized by. A dark corner with a random desk and chair isn’t going to make you feel inspired, and you’re likely to just end up working at the dining room table or on the couch.

Maybe it’s adding some interesting trim work to the room or putting up a nice piece of art or even adding a seating area with a funky rug and fun throw pillows. Whatever you do, make sure you enjoy the space.

Make investments in comfort

You might notice yourself sitting down more when you work from home. Improve posture and even burn some calories when you invest in a standing desk. It’s also a good idea to invest in an ergonomic chair, too.

The idea is to make your space as comfortable and supportive as possible so you don’t end up working on your bed or your couch. You want to designate those spaces as work-free zones so that you can truly relax when you’re done for the day.
